Board Game Media
A few years ago when I got into playing board games, I started out by walking into a local board gaming shop. On their web site there was a calendar and on a certain day each week people could go there to play some board games. After I went to a few meetings and played a few games I wanted to know how I could get more information about all the different games to play as there are so many.
A quick search on the internet lead me to a website call The Dice Tower. The Dice Tower was created by Tom Vasel who is a board game reviewer. The Dice Tower has expanded a lot since I have started watching but it is basically a website that you can go to watch reviews of games, find out thoughts, listen to podcasts and find out about board gaming news. Currently, I would say there are three main people who work at The Dice Tower and many other contributors who add their thoughts and reviews to the website.
I have really learned a lot of information about board games from The Dice Tower and still regularly visit the website. As with all things, some people, things and ideas are liked more then others and this stays true to The Dice Tower Network. I just wanted to name some people who I think do a really good job with each video they put out. Some or most of these people are contributors and may have their own shows separate from The Dice Tower. Some of the contributors I really like are Tom Vasel, Zee Garcia, Chaz Marler, Suzanne Sheldon, Jason Levine, Dave Luza, Mark Streed, Gary Pope, Dan from Dan and Cora, Snakes & Lattes and Dan King.
After finding out about The Dice Tower, this lead me to a website called Board Game Geek. This is a great website resource that you can read reviews, follow forums, watch videos and find out about rankings all about the board gaming world.
Through Board Game Geek, I found a few other great reviewers I like such as Rhado Run Through and Ricky Royal from Box of Delights. Another person who I think I should mention is Wil Wheaton. I honestly don’t know much about this person, I have heard that he has a popular show out called Table Top that has done well in and for the board gaming world.
In addition to these reviewers and promoters of the board gaming world, there are also online retailers and brick and mortar stores that are dedicated to board gaming. The four main online retailer’s of board games I know of are the two obvious and more known Amazon and EBay. The other two are Cool Stuff Inc and Miniatures Market. Of course there are also the direct publishers and your brick and mortar web sites such as Barnes and Nobles, Target etc.
There is so many ways to get more information about games. I think that it is great that we have all these resources available to us to use. As with all information, you need to judge for yourself if it is valuable to you or not. Sometimes I find myself gravitating towards certain reviewers and I just wanted to name a few that have caught my attention. I do sometimes feel that the quality of content of some reviews can be exceptional but it can also be lacking. I think that some of this may be caused by a lack or forgetting of rules, the way in which the review was shot and the reviewers attitude. For me, I think that it is a combination of all three that create a good review.
I didn’t want to put any pictures in this as I’m not sure how that was suppose to work so sorry it is picture less. Thanks for reading.
