Spring 2020 Recap

COVID-19 has made a difference in all our lives. They way we live, work, eat and interact with each other is very different now then it was just a few months ago. I am so glad that we are still able to get new anime content. I take my hat off to all those working in the anime industry. I hope you all stay safe, stay employed and continue doing what you do so that we all can enjoy your awesome content.  With that, let’s see how Spring 2020 turned out.

New Season Picks

Tower of God – A boy enters a mysterious tower and must face the challenges each floor brings. The hugely popular WEBTOON comes to life in April! – This one looks pretty good. This show might be my most anticipated new shows of all Spring 2020. — This was a really amazing show and probably my pick for best show of Spring 2020! The music an intro was awesome. The ED was awesome. The story was solid. I think in some of those middle and end episodes it started to get a little rushed, I could tell and wish it had another season to flush that part out. Overall, this was really good and left open for at least one more season that I will happily look forward to.

My Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! – An otome game loving girl gets reincarnated into her favorite game, but as the villain. Now she has to avoid all of the Bad Endings! – Not really sure about this one. I might give it a try. — I watched a few episodes of this and then stopped watching. I think I am definitely getting tired of isekai. But I always go back to story and even though this had a different twist on isekai to keep it fresh I just could not get into it.

The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me? – A salaryman wakes up inside the body of a young, magically gifted boy. Will his newly discovered powers bring him fortune or ruin? – This does not look that interesting and I’ll probably pass. — I ended up watching all of this one. Another isekai where the main character is so overpowered he doesn’t know what to do. This kind of story is ok but you need to have other really good side stories or the plot becomes really boring. The side stories were mediocre but I guess it was enough to keep me watching. The OP is really bad in my opinion or some might say really good. It is straight out of the 80’s with hard hitting guitar riffs, vocal shouting and grainy graphics. 6/10.

Food Wars! The Fifth Plate – In the heated final season of Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma, Yukihira Soma and the Totsuki Academy compete in The Blue! – The last season of Food Wars started to bother me a bit as they were more focused on the action and dramatic art scenes then the food and characters. There was no real story to begin with but it was getting even worse. I might go back to this one but not sure. —I watched the last few seasons to catch up as a refresher. Binging these episodes made me like the last few seasons a lot more. Unfortunately, this was postponed due to COVID and will hopefully air this season.

Woodpecker Detective’s Office – In 1909, a poet starts a detective agency to support his family and begins investigating a series of ghost appearances with his friend. – The setting seems interesting but the plot does not catch my attention. Not sure about this one as well. —Watched a few episodes and then stopped watching. I like the setting but way out of my league for thinking. Just like how I felt on Death Note. Way to complicated for me to even care to follow.

New Simulcasts

Ascendance of a Bookworm Part 2 – Main returns for a new season of Ascendence of a Bookworm as she begins her training as an apprentice priestess! – Did not like the first season and I will pass on this one. —Did not watch.

IDOLiSH7 Second Beat! – The Takanashi Productions idols continue their quest to save the company’s future! – I have not seen the first season. —Did not watch.

Fruits Basket: 2nd Season – Tohru Honda and the Sohma family return for Season 2 of the adaptation of the classic shojo manga! – I watched the first season when it was airing and I really liked it. I am looking forward to this one. — While giving out more of what is happening with the story, I didn’t get the same sense of tone I did with the first season. In the first season it was really cool to meet all the Zodiac animal and see what happens to this fun loving girl. I felt the first half of this season was just filler episodes with nothing really happening to further any of the characters. Then in the second half the tone shifted and now the story is going in a whole new direction.

Dropkick on My Devil!! Dash – A gothic lolita with delusions of grandeur summons a demon girl with a half-snake body, going on to have a strange, violent life together. – I heard some good things about this one. It seems as this might be season two so I might give this one a try from season one. –Watched one or two episodes and then stopped. Not my style of show.

MAJOR SECOND Season 2 – One young boy aims to become the best baseball catcher on his middle school team! – I have not seen season one. —Did not watch.

Princess Connect! Re: Dive – A young man wakes up in a fantasy world where three girls become his guide in this new land. – This might be interesting. If I have time, I’ll get to this one. — Did not watch.

Tsugumomo2 – Kazuya Kagami’s life takes a turn when a treasured keepsake from his late mother becomes a beautiful girl who saves his life! – Really not sure about this one either. — Did not watch.

SING “YESTERDAY” FOR ME – Four young adults who live near Shinjuku try to live their best lives through hardship in this story of love and humanity. – This one looks really good and am excited. The synopsis looks good. —This came in a very close runner up of best show of Spring 2020. I really liked this show and was always excited for the next episode. The characters are great and the story is really good. My big problem with this show, and I think it is some kind of Japanese thing as I see it happens a lot, is that people don’t finish their sentences. This makes me not really understand what they want. For me, there was a lot of talk and discussions and at the end, I don’t really know the conclusion they came to until I see what happens next. Ultimately, this show is a pretty good slice of life.

Digimon Adventure: – A brand new Digimon adventure begins with the classic DigiDestined cast! – I’ve seen parts of Digimon but not really sure I know or remember what it was about. I might watch this one. — Postponed due to COVID.

Re:ZERO – The Frozen Bond – Watch the story of how Emilia met Puck in this special Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- OVA! – I am really excited for this one as I really liked Re:ZERO but I heard this one might be delayed till Summer. — Postponed due to COVID

Shadowverse – A young boy fights in intense card battles based on the digital smartphone game “Shadowverse”! – I think I will pass on this one. I’ve got enough kid shows that I haven’t seen yet. — Did not watch.

Gundam Build Divers Re:RISE 2nd Season – The next great battle for the Build Divers begins in the second season of Gundam Build Divers Re:RISE! – The Gundam world is confusing for me and I don’t really understand it. I would need to start Gundam from a good starting point. —Did not watch.

The House Spirit Tatami-chan – A countryside ghost heads to Tokyo and takes in other monster roommates to afford the city life. – Not really sure about this one. — Did not watch.

Welcome to the JAPARI PARK S2 – All your favorite animal pals from Kemono Friends return for the second season of mini-series, Welcome to JAPARI PARK! – I have not seen Kemono Friends so I will pass on this. — Did not watch.

Wacky TV Nanana Chase the Kraken Monster! – The TV Nanana crew slip into the third season of network high jinks that will split your sides. – I have not seen the first season and this does not sound that good to me. — Did not watch.

Continuing Simulcasts

One Piece – Luffy and the Straw Hats continue their adventures in the vast and secluded land of Wano! – One Piece is amazing and Wano might be one of my top five favorite arcs of One Piece. — Basically postponed due to COVID.

Ahiru no Sora – Sora vows to dominate his first high school basketball tournament, but he must take on the whole school to get there. – I have not seen this one. — Did not watch.

Case Closed – Ace teen detective Shinichi Kudo solves cases after becoming trapped in the body of a ten-year-old. – I have not seen this one. — Did not watch.

Black Clover – Asta and the Black Bulls begin to uncover the secrets behind the devils and curse magic across the kingdoms! – Asta’s voice annoys me on this show. I might give the dub a try and see if I like that one instead. — Did not watch.

BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS – Boruto continues his adventures to become the ultimate ninja with Team 7 and all your favorite ninja from the Hidden Leaf Village! – I’m very conflicted in this one as I really love Naruto. I might give this one another shot. — Did not watch.

A Certain Scientific Railgun T – Misaka’s electro-manipulation abilities make her popular in Academy City in the 3rd season of A Certain Scientific Railgun! – I was not that into A Magical Index and I think this is a continuation. — Postponed due to COVID

Out of 26 shows, 5 postponed due to COVID, 3 I stopped watching and 4 I watched.

Two out of the four shows I finished watching were really good.

I actually started watching The Clone Wars which is turning out to be really good. I know it is not Japanese anime but it is anime and I am really enjoying it.

The Crunchyroll Summer 2020 line up is looking pretty good. I’m really happy that COVID has just been a postponement of some shows that I am really excited for. I haven’t been writing as many articles as I would have liked to so I would like to get back to that. But so it goes, life happens.
