Summer is here and I feel things are ramping up here in the US. The COVID shot is available to anyone who wants it. However, I feel that as the country starts to open back up and people are ready to get out and do things with others, the virus is still there. There seem to be a large number of people who don’t want to get the shot. I am also excited for the Japan Olympics. But, I also see that COVID is still here. Hopefully the Olympics goes well. As we move into Summer lets take a look at some of the anime we get to watch for the Summer 2021 lineup.
I am going to list the Crunchyroll titles of the Summer season in the category they are listed under and give a short thought.
New Simulcasts
Battle Game in 5 Seconds
Studio: SynergySP, Vega Entertainment
A fight of quick wit and power commences as a group of individuals battle every five seconds after meeting!
Not sure about this one.
–I ended up watching all of this. For me this was an average filler if you are looking for something to watch. I don’t really understand the title as that was just really a small part of the show. The story was ok and backstories were better. The story could have been rushed a bit but then it might have been too long for what it was. The animation was below average.
D_CIDE TRAUMEREI THE ANIMATION
Studio: Sanzigen
After the death of his brother, one young man must fight against invading monsters between the worlds of dreams and reality!
Is the title French? I might try this one.
–Did not watch.
Drug Store in Another World – The Slow Life of a Cheat Pharmacist
Studio: EMT Squared
One man sent to another world is going to make the best of his medicine crafting skills, and that’s the doctor’s orders!
The plot sounds good but sounds like a harlem. Not sure I’ll get around to this one.
–Did not watch.
Fena: Pirate Princess
Studio: Production I.G
Airtime: August 14
After an orphan escapes to the high seas, she takes her place as captain of a pirate crew for a swashbuckling adventure!
This looks like a solid show but doesn’t start till later. I will watch this one.
–This was one of the top shows of the season. The main plot driving the story was ok but I really liked how it was more historical fiction. I think the art is what made this show. I really liked how all the characters looked and the background art was just incredible! The animation was pretty good. The music was good. This lived up to my expectations as being a solid show.
Girlfriend, Girlfriend
Studio: Tezuka Productions
From the creator of AHO-GIRL comes a triangular relationship story as one high schooler dates two girlfriends at the same time!
Don’t think I will like this one. Probably not.
–Did not watch.
I’m Standing on a Million Lives Season 2
Studio: Maho Film
Yusuke Yotsuya and the other humans begin their fight against the Orc Army in I’m Standing on a Million Lives Season 2!
The first season was decent. I’ll keep watching.
–Started watching and forgot what happened before. Didn’t want to re-watch the old episodes so I stopped watching.
Idolish7 Third BEAT!
Studio: Troyca
IDOLiSH7, TRIGGER, and Re:vale’s popularity continues to rise, but a looming shadow threatens to shake things up.
Might try this out but I need to start from the start.
–Did not watch.
Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story Season 2 -The Eve of Awakening-
Studio: Shaft
Iroha Tamaki and the magical girls return in Season 2 of Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story.
Don’t want to watch. The last side story was all over the place and made no sense to me.
–Did not watch.
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S
Studio: Kyoto Animation
Tohru, Kobayashi and all the dragon friends are back in all-new episodes of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S!
Need to catch up on the last Dragon Maid show. Then I will watch this one.
–Another really good show. I like how it’s basically slice of live with dragons thrown in. There is some great story progression for a show that is really about nothing. Starting to really like the evolution of Kana. I’m also going to give the best ending to this season. There were some pretty good endings but I think this one just eked out the win.
My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! X
Studio: SILVER LINK.
All routes lead to another great season of Catarina Claes’ adventures in My Next Life As a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! X!
Don’t want to watch.
–Did not watch.
NIGHT HEAD 2041
Studio: Shirogumi
Based on the 1992 Japanese drama, NIGHT HEAD 2041 follows two siblings attempting to track down two psychic brothers.
Night Head just reminds me of Night Raid from Akame ga Kill and the art looks similar. I might give it a try.
–I got to almost the end of this show and then it went somewhere that I don’t like so I stopped watching. The entire show was a bit confusing as I didn’t fully understand what was happening which probably kept me watching. There were some decent art scenes but overall, the art and animation was below average.
Peach Boy Riverside
Studio: Asahi Production
One princess aims to travel the world when one day she encounters a famous ogre-slaying warrior!
This looks pretty good.
–Stopped watching. I don’t even remember why. What I remember was it seem to be all about how much blood can be spilled to draw attention.
Remake Our Life!
Studio: feel.
Transported ten years into the past, one former game designer will make the most of remaking his creative life!
I’m not sure about these time travel shows. Maybe.
–Did not watch.
Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles
Studio: TMS Entertainment
Realizing his mysterious past, one orphan sets out to live a better life attending a prestigious academy for noble children.
This looks ok. I will try it out.
–This was ok. Ultimately about a character who starts week and shortly becomes overpowered. I thought the story started to get a little muddled at the end. I’m not sure why the main character outfit was so close to Kirito’s as that seems like it would be a bad choice being in kind of a similar genre.
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 2
Studio: 8 Bit
Rimuru and Tempest set up to clash against the forces of the Demon Lord Clayman in the continuation of Slime Season 2!
More slime is good. Hopefully they keep the quality up for visuals and sound.
–This show does not disappoint. If you like Slime, this just adds to this amazing story. There are so many new solid characters introduced and the plot just keeps progressing at an amazing rate.
The aquatope on white sand
Studio: P.A. Works
One former idol goes to Okinawa and finds a new life helping a struggling aquarium from shutting down.
This looks like a really solid show. I am really hopeful for this one.
–This turned out to be pretty good. The art was pretty good and the plot was good. There are definitely some plot elements that I didn’t like but it was good overall.
The Idaten Deities Know Only Peace
Studio: MAPPA
As demons wake from their great slumber, descendants of battle-gods called Idaten and humanity fight back!
Not sure on the art for this. Looks like it might be for kids. I might try it anyway.
–This show is definitely not for kids. There seemed to be a lot of controversy about this show but I liked it and thought it was a pretty solid show. I’m not sure why but I really liked the art style. This was a very over the top show and everything done was taken to the extreme. There seem to be a lot of moral parallels from the show to the real world that I saw. I am also going to give this show the award of best opening. The music is good and the animation is just crazy. This opening is on par crazy with Keep Your Hands of Eizouken! opening. This one also had a really good ending and could easily have won.
The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated!
Studio: SILVER LINK
After the Dark Realm falls and the Great Jahy is defeated, she must survive in the human world and in a one-room apartment!
Don’t think I will like this one. But looks like a similar plot to The Devil is a Part-Timer!. Maybe I’ll check it out.
–I was right and this show was similar to The Devil is a Part-Timer and it was fantastic. The small bits of evolution over time for the main character Jahy is great. If you like comedy/slice of life you might want to check this one out. Another really good ending, but in the end did not win.
Theatre of Darkness 9th
Studio: ILCA
Don’t want to watch.
–Did not watch.
TSUKIMICHI -Moonlit Fantasy-
Studio: C2C
Shunned by a goddess by not being enough of a hero, one former high school student aims to survive in a new fantasy world!
This looks ok. Might give it a try.
–This show turned out to be much better then I expected it to be. This gave me similar vibes to Slime and could turn into something really great. Another isekai about an overpowered character with a pretty solid plot. Art is good and the animation is good.
BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS
Studio: Studio Pierrot
Boruto continues his adventures to become the ultimate ninja with Team 7 and all your favorite ninja from the Hidden Leaf Village!
Don’t want to watch.
–Did not watch.
CASE CLOSED
Studio: TMS Entertainment

Still want to get into this one. But, I need to start from the start.
–Still did not watch.

A brand new Digimon adventure begins with the classic DigiDestined cast!
Don’t want to watch.

DRAGON QUEST: THE ADVENTURE OF DAI
Studio: Toei Animation
Based on the classic Dragon Quest series, follow Dai and his party in their grand adventure to defeat the demon lord Hadlar!
Don’t want to watch.

KIYO IN KYOTO: FROM THE MAIKO HOUSE
Studio: J.C.Staff
Two girls chase after their dreams in the ancient capital in this healing slice-of-life anime about an aspiring maiko and the house chef!
This show was surprisingly better then I expected and I want to see more.
–This is such a great homey slice of life show. It really just brings me joy when I watch this one.
MY HERO ACADEMIA SEASON 5
Studio: BONES
Deku and Class 1-A continue their hero training and unleash new powers in the latest season of My Hero Academia!
My Hero has always been a solid show for me ever since it came out and I am looking forward to see what happens next.
–More My Hero is always good. I have to say that the first half of the season was ok, I felt that they did everything that they were trying to do in one episode at the end of the season. The entire first half could have been condensed and they could have shown more of the second half which was some really good episodes of My hero. They second half was really just great story progression and really solid.
ONE PIECE
Studio: Toei Animation
Luffy and the Straw Hats continue their adventures in Wano and fight against the powerful Emperors!
Finally we are back to Luffy and doing Straw Hat things. I’m really excited for this season!
–This has to be, overall for me, some of the best One Piece art and animation I have seen through all of One Piece. I heard that they got a new director and this season was just so amazing! I’m going to say that One Piece has always been a top show and there have been so many great moments over the years but I’m finally going to give this my award of best of the season. This is the One Piece I have been waiting for. There has been so much build up to this part of the arc and it is delivering. A solid opening but was not the best this season.
SD GUNDAM WORLD HEROES
Studio: Sunrise
A new SD Gundam series begins with battles set across the world stage!
Want to get back into Gundam but not sure how. Maybe this, but probably not.
–Did not watch.
TO YOUR ETERNITY
Studio: Brain’s Base
Fushi’s journey to understand humanity and the world continues in new episodes of To Your Eternity.
I started to really get into this show in the last season so I’m pretty excited for this one.
–This is another really great show. There is so many things, I think this show is doing right. If you liked the first season, this is just more.
TOKYO REVENGERS

Don’t want to watch.

WELCOME TO DEMON SCHOOL, IRUMA-KUN! SEASON 2
Studio: Bandai Namco Pictures
(Demon) school is back in session as Iruma and his devlish classmates continue their lessons in the dark arts!
Don’t want to watch.
–Did not watch.
–I actually ended up watching about the same amount of shows.
I need to catch up on Dragon Maid. I also need to watch the Gloomy Bear show. I’ve been wanting to see what JoJo’s is about so I might check that out. I also want to check out Case Closed. My rewatch that I want to see is Outlaw Star and Haikyu. Have a fun Summer.
–I was able to re-watch season one of Dragon Maid and that is just a really good show. In addition to those shows I re-watched what was made newly available to Crunchroll, Kenichi: Mighty Disciple. I really liked this show when I watched it years ago. It was still really good but perhaps went down just a half point. This was about a high school kid being bullied so he starts training martial art to get stronger. I also re-watched Gurren Lagann from Studio Trigger. I saw it years ago and I know there is still a lot of hype about it and wanted to refresh my memory. It was kind of what I remember that there were two parts. I really liked the first part and the second part was not as good as the first as I remembered it. It was the same. For me, the first part is really solid and the second part slows a bit. I do really like the very end of the show which seems very rare. This show was about a future fictional world where humanity is living underground. The main character is a tunnel digger who is kind of an outcast and an outgoing guy who becomes friends with the tunnel digger. This show is ultimately an over the top action mecha show. After watching it, I didn’t realize all the similarities to another show that Studio Trigger put out, Kill la Kill.
I also was able to watch Star Wars Visions which is a series of short anime made by different Japanese studios telling their own takes on different Star Wars characters who they created. I was really hyped for this but it definitely did not live up to my expectations. It was kind of like the Animatrix. A few stories were ok but there was something that bothered me about most of the stories. I might re-watch this to give it another chance.
What did you watch in the Summer season? Do you agree or disagree? Let me know in the comments below.
