Winter 2021 Recap

2020 is gone now. Bye. There were some good shows but for most people and the rest of life, I think they would call it a long overstayed welcome. There is a bit more hope now with a vaccine for COVID on the way. Hopefully it is distributed to the masses sooner then later this year. But, I’m already seeing events that were cancelled last year continue to get cancelled this year. The good thing is we can all social distance by watching some good anime. Let’s look at the Crunchyroll Winter 2021 lineup.

I am going to list the Crunchyroll titles of the Winter season in the category they are listed under and give a short thought.

New Releases

ABCiee Working Diary

–Probably won’t watch this one. (Did not Watch.)

Anime AzurLane: Slow Ahead!

–This looks like the show where girls are historical vehicles. One show was KanColle where they were historical ships. There was also one where they were planes but I didn’t watch that one. The concept is really cool but KanColle was ok. I might give this a try. (Did not Watch.)

Armor Shop for Ladies & Gentlemen II

–This looks kind of interesting. I saw a short add that makes me want to give this a try.

–(Spoiler)– I did give this a try and the concept is good. However this show is a comedy show with the comedy mostly centered around sexually demeaning behavior. Not sure if that is the right word but I am not watching this show any more. (Did not continue to watch.)

Bungo Stray Dogs Wan

–I’m not exactly sure what Wan means but here is my guess. A show turned chibi comedy and three minutes long. I really like Bungo stray Dogs but the three minute shows are so short, I need to change my watching style. I usually watch while eating but sine it is so short I’m better off watching this infront of my computer monitor. I’ll probably watch it and binge all the 3 min shows at once. (Did not watch.)

Dr. Ramune -Mysterious Disease Specialist-

Don’t miss your check-up with Dr. Ramune, a specialist in mysterious diseases that live in people’s hearts.
–This looks good. I’ll give this a try. (Did not like it as the diseases were too over the top. Stopped watching.)

Dr. STONE (Season 2)

Senku and the Kingdom of Science prepare for the upcoming fight of Science vs Force in Dr. STONE!
–I liked the concept of Dr. STONE but I stopped watching it because I felt there was something wrong with the show. Will not watch. (Did not watch.)

EX-ARM

In 2030, a policewoman and her android partner activate the AI superweapon EX-ARM, and find out what’s behind the technology!
–This looks good. I’ll give this a try. (Did not watch.)

GIVEN The Movie

In this direct continuation from the TV series, the Given band members must balance their feelings of current and past relationships.
–This is a strange one. I liked the show GIVEN. Movies are kind of a cheat. I’ll watch it to see more GIVEN. (Did not watch.)

Heaven’s Design Team

Follow the top designers at Heaven’s Animal Design Department as they try to close the deal with their biggest client: GOD.
–This looks good. I’ll give this a try. (Another interesting concept. Just not really entertaining for me and might actually be like what one would do if this were a job. Too many unimportant work meetings that have nothing to do with me. Stopped watching.)

The Hidden Dungeon Only I Can Enter

The son of an impoverished noble family finds a hidden dungeon that allows him to improves his skills…at a price!
–This looks good. I’ll give this a try. (I’m so sick of sexualized sterotypical male characters. Stopped watching.)

I★CHU

Based on the I★CHU smartphone game, follow the students at the Etolie Vio School for born-to-be idols!
–I like idol shows. I’ll give this a try. (This was a pretty solid show. I would say this had the best ending this season.)

Idolls!

–See above. The art looks better then I-CHU but I-CHU seems different because they have a mix cast of male and female characters. I’ll think I-CHU is going to be better. Let’s see. (Did not like the art or the concept. Stopped watching.)

Laid-Back Camp Season 2

Get ready for another comfy camping season with Nadeshiko, Rin, and the Outdoor Activities Club!
–Laid-Back Camp was really awesome and I can’t wait to see more. (Really good! All the characters are really cool and their attention to detail is awesome. Just wondering where all the male character classmates are? I guess that might change the dynamic of the show and I really like how it is now. Definitely in my top shows this season.)

Non Non Biyori Nonstop

These small-town girls aren’t stoppin’ for nothin’ in the third season of Non Non Byori!
–Didn’t see the other season or seasons. I would have to watch that first. We’ll see if I get around to it. (Did not watch.)

Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Season 2

After learning more behind the Death Loop and Witches of Sin, Subaru vows to save Emilia and his friends from further doom.
–I really like Re:Zero. Unfortunately for me, last season was really confusing. I kind of get that because the MC has to figure out the story a bit backwards. But, it was so confusing, it kind of got a little boring. I’ll watch this season and hope more progress is made. (It was ok. It was still a bit confusing to me but I kind of get most of it. I don’t really get where at the end the arc was basically wrapped up and everyone was happy but Rem is still unconscious. I think the problem is that there is too much talking about their ideals and I just don’t really care. I really liked Beatrice as a character better then Rem and I don’t really get it. Same with Rosewald. I have not idea what he is trying to do. I also really liked the Bowel Hunter when she first appeared and hopped she had more of a role to play.)

So I’m a Spider, So What?

One high school girl is reborn into an itsy bitsy spider and uses her positivity to survive as one of the lowest-ranked beasts!
–There has been a lot of adds and push for this show. Sometimes that is a good thing but it could also be bad. I’ll see what this is about. (I have no idea what to think of this show. It started off interesting but then they just decided to throw in the human part. They they talked about class before death and I had no attachment to any of those characters. I still don’t even really know how they relate to the MC except for a few comments here and there. Then they looked liked they ran out of budget at times and did obvious CGI that I don’ think blended well. The MC gets all these skill that I don’t even know what they do and soon don’t even care. Then she gets split personality that gets more I don’t really care. I honestly at this point did some research to see where this show was even going. I got an idea and seems like there is a bit of a fan base but I’m not really hooked. It takes to long to develop and they do a horrible job at it.  There are some parts that are good then more parts that just don’t make any sense to me. I also know this is a taste and not mine but the ending I skip every time as I am ready to get an epileptic seizure from it.)

The Quintessential Quintuplets 2

Futaro Uesugi and the Nakano Quintuplets continue their studies in Season 2, with love and marriage right on the horizon!
–Did not finish the first season. I might go back to it. (Finished the first season and though it was pretty good. This second season definitely changes the show and I think it is for the worst. I finished it but not sure I liked it. The first season they were all fighting for something and this season seemed like they were all fighting against each other. I liked Ichika at first but she is just a horrible person. I also don’t understand why Yotsuba is not on some sort of sports team. I also feel as if Itsuki is not really in this season. Team Miku but she is insanely shy. I like Yotsuba but I don’t feel they are a good match.)

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 2

Rimuru returns to protect his friends and the Jura Tempest Federation in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 2!
–This show is slightly above average. It’s not amazing because the MC is so overpowered I don’t really feel any tension but it is ultimately a good show. I’ll watch it. (This is probably my favorite show of the season! I’m honestly surprised I said that. They story is good and while I don’t feel as much tension as I might feel in other shows, the art is good and the sound quality is amazing.)

Tropical-Rouge! Pretty Cure

A brand new PreCure series is coming to Crunchyroll, and now it’s time to get tropical!
–Stopped watching the first series. (Did not watch.)

True Cooking Master Boy

Mao’s culinary adventures in 19th century China continue with the threat of the Underground Cooking Society looming closer!
–This has been an average show. Something to watch. I’ll probably watch it but there was nothing really exciting in the first season. (Might have gotten a bit better this season but the ultimate story is horrible. The show is more about the cooking and what each person is going to make. An average show.)

Umamusume: Pretty Derby Season 2

On your mark. Get set. GO (watch the brand new season of Umamusume: Pretty Derby)!
–Have not seen the first season. (Did not watch.)

Wave!! -Let’s go surfing!!-

Follow the story of these beach boys who learned to love the ultimate sport of surfing!
–This looks pretty good. Growing up in Hawaii, I’m kind of excited to see a surfing anime. Hope it’s good. (This was a good show. There was an interesting twist in the show that I’m not sure needed to happen. I think it had the best opening this season. Really did not like the stereotyping of the Hawaiian board shaper. All he did the entire show was say heeey! and give the shaka sign. Horrible. The surfing was ok even though they were doing pro trix.)

WIXOSS DIVA(A)LIVE

The “Wixoss” card game moves online with intense “Diva Battles” in Wixoss Diva(A)Live!
–I’ll give it a try. (Did not watch.)

World Trigger Season 2

New enemies draw near as the Border agents prepare for the fight in the second season of World Trigger!
–Did not watch the first season. (Did not watch.)

Theatre of Darkness: Yamishibai 8

–Don’t like horror so probably not. (Did not watch.)

Yatogame-chan Kansatsu Nikki 3

The Nagoya-centric comedy series continues in the third season of Yatogame-chan Kansatsu Nikki!

–Did not see the first season. (Did not watch.)

Continuing Series

ANIME KAPIBARASAN

Snuggle up with this adorable series featuring Kapibarasan and their animal friends!
–Did not see the first season. (Did not watch.)

Attack on Titan Final Season

The colossal final season of Attack on Titan is here as the survey corps members find out what awaits them across the sea.
–Don’t like this show. (Did not watch.)

BLACK CLOVER

Asta and the Black Bulls begin to uncover the secrets behind the devils and curse magic across the kingdoms!
–Still waiting for the dub. (Did not watch.)

BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS

Boruto continues his adventures to become the ultimate ninja with Team 7 and all your favorite ninja from the Hidden Leaf Village!
–I’m done with this. Though I heard the original creator of Naruto is coming back. Should I skip to the new stuff. Most likely not. (Did not watch.)

CASE CLOSED

Ace teen detective Shinichi Kudo solves cases after becoming trapped in the body of a ten-year-old.
–Still want to give this a try. (Did not watch.)

Digimon Adventure:

A brand new Digimon adventure begins with the classic DigiDestined cast!
–Don’t like it. (Did not watch.)

DRAGON QUEST: THE ADVENTURE OF DAI

Based on the classic Dragon Quest series, follow Dai and his party in their grand adventure to defeat the demon lord Hadlar!
–Don’t like it. (Did not watch.)

HEALIN’ GOOD PRETTY CURE

Three girls come together to form the Healin’ Good Pretty Cure team and defend The Healing Garden, a secret world inside Earth!
–Don’t like it. Wait, is this a different show then Tropical Rogue! (Did not watch.)

JUJUTSU KAISEN

Don’t miss out on continuing episodes of JUJUTSU KAISEN, the next Shonen Jump hit only on Crunchyroll!
–An amazing first season. I’m really pumped for this show. (This was good but season one was just so much better. I liked some parts but since it is a fighting anime I have to compare this to Naruto fights and those are for the most part just better. There are also some abilities that are the same as some characters in Naruto. Sure, Naruto had a lot of characters and a lot of fights but if you are going to make a show that is similar to Naruto then you have to compare it as well. What’s good is that I feel they didn’t skip budget and their fights were probably just as good as Naruto.)

MR. OSOMATSU 3RD SEASON

Those wild and goofy sextuplets are at it again with the third season of Mr. Osomatsu!
–I have not tried it. (Did not watch.)

Oh, Suddenly Egyptian God

–I have not tried it. (Did not watch.)

ONE PIECE

Luffy and the Straw Hats continue their adventures in Wano and fight against the powerful Emperors!
–The creator Oda is stepping up his game for the Wano arc. One Piece is my favorite anime and I think it’s just been on in the background because I really did not like most of what happened in the last arc but Wano is now probably in my top five favorite arcs. I’m starting to feel like One Piece should be getting nominated for some awards for Wano. (One Piece has been such a long running show that there are so many spinoff’s that Oda could do. In this season, he felt that we needed to know a certain part of history and so this entire season felt like a spin off. He could easily do 100 plus episodes of just this one spin off and there are hundreds of these everywhere. The world he created is so massive. The problem is that I don’t really care about this stuff. You don’t need to put this stuff in to make One Piece longer if that is what you are trying to do. I want to know what happens to Luffy and his crew. I want to know about the dissolved 7 Warlords. I want to know about Garp. I want to know about Big Mom and Kaido. I want to know about Dragon and Sabo. I want to know about Big Morgan. I want to know about Kuma  and Jewlery. I want to know about Aokiji. I don’t want to know about what is happening now in the show. You could easily have 13 episodes about how the 7 Warlords deal with the Marines. There is so much more you could do.)

Onyx Equinox

Catch EVERY episode of Izel’s journey as humanity’s champion and the war between gods in Onyx Equinox, all available now!
–Not watching. (Did not watch.)

SHADOWVERSE

A young boy fights in intense card battles based on the digital smartphone game “Shadowverse”!
–Is this Yu-Gh-Oh next generation or something? (Did not watch.)

WITH A DOG AND A CAT, EVERY DAY IS FUN

The series for those who can’t choose between cats or dogs, Inu-kun and Neko-sama fill their owner’s day with laughter and love.
–Probably not. (Did not watch.)

YASHAHIME: PRINCESS HALF-DEMON

Towa, Setsuna, and Moroha continue their Feudal Fairytale adventures in the Inuyasha sequel series!
–Yashahime is basically Inyuyasha with a few more interesting main characters. I’ll keep watching. (This season got a bit more interesting. Starting to learn more about the actions of certain people. Aslo confirmed that Rin is the mother. How old was she when she meet Seshomaru in Inuyasha? I guess he is a dog demon but the math on that is kind of creepy.)

Overview

Out of 42 shows, 6 I really want to watch and 12 I’ll give a try. (Out of 42 shows, I watched 11, and stopped watching 5.)

Compared to Fall 2020 which had 38 shows, 8 I really want to watch, 10 I want to try and 1 maybe. (Out of 38 shows, I saw 10 shows, stopped watching 3 and one I should finish.)

The Surprise best show this season for me was That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 2. I also really liked Laid Back Camp Season 2 and I*Chu. Wave, Jujusu Kaisen and Yashahime were also decent.

I was able to re-watch all of Yowamushi Pedal which I again confirmed was really good! I also saw 5 cm per second and Voices of a Distant Star by Makoto Shinkai. Both were definitely his style of show. 5 cm per second I felt for the main character. I feel like Voices of a Distant Star was shorter but hit harder. There were some strange things that could get fixed in that show though. I also re-watched all seasons of My Hero to get ready for the next season. Another really good show I like a lot. Currently, I’m almost done with Hajime no Ippo which is also another good show. Even though it is a bit old I feel it still holds up better then a lot of stuff coming out now though it still has some stereo types that I don’t like in it.
