Fall 2020 Recap

What a Summer its been. So many things continue to happen in the world. Let’s look forward to the Fall season and hope that we get a few minutes of joy and excitement of your favorite shows to watch.

I am going to list the Crunchyroll titles of the Fall season in the category they are listed under and give a short thought.

New Simulcasts

Anime KAPIBARASAN

Snuggle up with this adorable series featuring Kapibarasan and their animal friends!

–Art looks not for me. Not watching. (Did not watch.)

Attack on Titan Final Season

The colossal final season of Attack on Titan approaches as the survey corps members find out what awaits them across the sea.

–I’ve watched Attack on Titan and there are so many things I don’t like about this show. The only thing good about it is that others seem to like it and it has definitely become a gateway show to some anime watcher. Not for me. (Did not watch.)

Burn The Witch

Get bewitched in Reverse London with this three-episode movie from Bleach’s Tite Kubo!

–This looks kind of good but seems to be a cheat as it is a movie. I’ll probably watch it. (Interesting. I would watch a season of this as it could be interesting. It was a little fast paced as a lot of information was presented in a short period of time. I think it could have been a little less jam packed with stuff but not bad. I remember reading an article that the narrator of this show had passed away. She only had a short part but we’ve lost a lot of people during 2020. Don’t remember what the reason was.)

Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai

Based on the classic Dragon Quest series, follow Dai and his party in their grand adventure to defeat the demon lord Hadlar!

–I think this could be ok. I’ll give it a try. (This is geared toward a kids show. I could see that and din’t want to watch any more. The theme was not interesting enough.)

D4DJ First Mix

Mix it up and groove with D4DJ, the new anime based on the Bushiroad game!

–This could be good. The art seems good and I like Bushiroad but I haven’t played this game. I’ll give it a try. (Did not watch.)

EAGLE TALON ~Golden Spell~

The classic Eagle Talon series returns after the organization uncover the “Golden Spell,” a mysterious power that controls people’s will!

–Art looks not for me. Not watching. (Did not watch.)

Genie Family 2020

The classic Tatsunoko Genie Family returns for the series’ 50th-anniversary anime series!

–Not sure. Probably not watching. (Did not watch.)

Golden Kamuy Season 3

The Immortal Sugimoto and Asirpa aim to reunite and find the hidden gold, even if that means teaming up with former enemies!

–This show is amazing! They have taken so many left turns when I thought they were going right and I don’t even know where this is going. I have really liked this show and can’t wait. (This show is rising in the ranks for me. The characters and the story are really well written. The show keeps getting better and better each season. And, they left so there is definitely room for another season or even more.)

Grand Blues!

Get ready for some massive (joke) drops in this Granblue Fantasy spin-off comedy!

–Grand Blue Fantasy I saw at a Sakura-Con Convention showing a few years ago and I really like it. I heard there is some sort of game that I haven’t played. I’ll watch this one but I usually don’t like comedy so not sure if I’ll stick with it. (I don’t think I finished this one. These were three minute episodes and with the OP and ED even shorter. Since I’m in front of a TV and there is no remote, I have a hard time watching these because they are so short. It was ok from what I remember though.)

HAIKYU!! TO THE TOP

The Karasuno High School Volleyball team continues to reach TO THE TOP as the Nationals Tournament continues!

–Another continuing show that is amazing! Haikyu builds Dragon Ball Z tension but it is so much better and the art and scenes are just so good. (Haikyu is just a great show. It help me get motivated to want to do something. And the art is really good. The differences between each character with clothing, attitude and height are spot on. I can’t wait for the next season!)

I’m Standing on a Million Lives

A lone wolf student is sent to another world where he must become a hero to save himself and his party!

–Looks like another isekai. The art looks good so I’ll give it a try. (It’s what I thought it would be. Another isekai with their own twist. It was good enough to keep watching.)

Idolish7 Second Beat!

IDOLiSH7 tries to deal with their growing popularity as each member takes on new responsibilities and faces new hardships.

–Haven’t watched the others so probably won’t get to this one though it seems like it could be good. (Did not watch.)

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? III

The dungeon hero Bell returns for the third season of Danmachi with an encounter with a monster girl that will change Orario!

–There seem to be a lot of really awesome continuing shows and this is one of them. I can’t wait to see what happens to Bell next. (This season did not disappoint me. It was really good. It made me cry. A strange theme but a good one. While I have liked the show very much, I kind of wished they would just do what the show is about and go gain some levels and adventure. Aside from the first season, the other two seasons have had kind of a side quest vibe to them. I also really liked the ED. It was pretty solid and I think should have been a nomination for ED of the 2020. I don’t think it would have won but really good.)

Iwakakeru – Sport Climbing Girls

Aim for the top (of the rock climbing wall)! These girls are gonna show what their core sport is all about!

–I am a rock climber and this show is hyped up to 1,000% for me. The art looks really good and the art looks like the director is a climber or knows a lot about climbing because it looks really realistic. (This show had me very hyped. but then I saw it. I would classify this show as a rock climbing show for people who rock climb. I know that sounds strange but I think it could have been so much better and fell way below the bar. Rock climbing is already what I would say an obscure sport. Not everyone understands that. Mainstream sports like baseball or basketball are more known sports so people might already have a grasp on the rules. But shows like Haikyu, Kuroko’s Basketball or Slam Dunk explain how to play the sport even though the rules are more widely known. In this show they start using terms that only people who are already climber know and never explain them. In one of the earlier episodes they explain one climbing term called drop knee or I guess egyption in some places. That’s the only time. The rest of the time throughout the entire show they are saying things that only people who are climbers would understand. Then you have an all girls high school team with no apparent manager maintaining their own rock climbing wall. Very unrealistic. Also, all girls team going to an all girls competition. This might exist but the number of girls competing at the level that they are at in the same place in high school is unrealistic. And I just mentioned the expertise level that they are climbing at. I would guess in real life that there are less then 2,500 people who can climb at the level that they are climbing at which is also just a term they throw out there. I might say that is a modest number. I would also say that the ratio of guys to girls at that level is probably 1/3 female. Now, saying that there are maybe 50 or so high school girls in a climbing competition and about 20 of them can all climb at that level is ridiculous. Then, they kept comparing climbing to other sports. I know some of those sports might help you as a climber, but it seemed like it was their hook to make people understand. Climbing is like bubble shooter. Connect the bubble colors. This is so ridiculous to me. To me, its like saying washing the dishes is like drawing. The water is blue and you have a blue crayon. Wow… Or, in both you move your hands around and then the dishes gets done and a piece of art gets drawn. Finally, this was probably a budget issues but it would have been so nice to see more long shots of the full climb instead of just a bunch of stills. I saw they did this a few times and it turned out pretty good. Like in the intro. I do have to say that I liked the character art and some of the battles that they were facing were real. Just not explained. I’m still waiting for that good climbing anime. I’m glad that there is a climbing anime that exists now even though I think it is horrible.)

Is The Order a Rabbit? BLOOM

Get ready for more tea time at the Rabbit House as Is The Order a Rabbit? BLOOM is served!

–Seems like a continuing show that I haven’t seen. It looks pretty good but probably won’t get around to it. (Did not watch.)

JUJUTSU KAISEN

Get ready for JUJUTSU KAISEN, the next Shonen Jump hit only on Crunchyroll!

–Seems like they are really pushing this one. It looks good. I might try it. (I was not ready for this level of show. This show is amazing. It blew all my expectations of it out of the water. So very good. The art. The characters. The story. If you haven’t seen this show and like Shonen action, I recommend this show to you. On top of the the OP is pretty good. But, even better is the ED. This, for me is the best ED of 2020 by far. It might even rank up there for my top 10 ED ever that I have seen. A very solid show.)

Katana Maidens – Tomoshibi

Katana Maidens returns with an OVA adapting the Katana Maidens: Kizamishi Issen no Tomoshibi smartphone game!

–Haven’t seen the previous one’s so I probably won’t get to this one. (Did not watch.)

Mr. Osomatsu 3rd Season

Those wild and goofy sextuplets are at it again with the third season of Mr. Osomatsu!

–Haven’t seen this one and probably won’t get to it. (Did not watch.)

Noblesse

After awakening from an 820-year slumber, Raizel tries to fit in with modern high schoolers while protecting his fellow nobles!

–Another one they seem to be really pushing. Seems like it is continuing from a movie or show. I don’t remember. I watched a you should watch this before you watch this show and it was confusing and I had no idea what was going on. I might try this one but not really sure. (Did not watch.)

One Room Season 3

As the protagonist, follow the story that develops in your (one) room.

–The art looks really good on this. The title reminds me of a movie called room, where a mom and son were trapped in a room. I don’t get that from this art so I might try it. (Did not watch.)

Onyx Equinox

One young Aztec boy is summoned to act as humanity’s champion as a fight between gods breaks out.

–This looks like it could be pretty good. Not sure the audience it is gear towards. I think I’ll give it a shot. Looks like it could be Yu-Gi-Oh ish. (I saw the first few episodes and stopped watching. I had two problems with it. the VA was in English and didn’t not seem to really match any of the characters. The bigger problem was that I didn’t really like the art style. Reminded me of American made show which I think it was. Kind of like a Heavy Metal feel. Some stories were ok but most, I didn’t really like. And, the story seemed sub par.)

Rail Romanesque

All aboard Rail Romanesque, where one young man is set out to revive his small town of Ohitoyo with the power of railroads!

–This could be interesting. Might give it a try. (Did not watch.)

Strike Witches: Road to Berlin

–There is no write up about this one but I think it is a continuation of the Strike Witches series. A show where the girls are airplanes similar to Katana Maidens or KanColle where the girls are real Japanese warships. I like the idea. I watched a few episodes of KanColle and it was ok but there seemed to be something missing. I’ll probably pass on this as I haven’t seen any other Strike Witches. (Did not watch.)

That is the Bottleneck

Anything could happen at Hot Hot Mart, one suburban convenience store known for its hand-made dishes.

–Art looks intentionally bad due to budget or other. The write-up seems like it could be interesting. Might give this a try. (Did not watch.)

THAT TIME I GOT REINCARNATED AS A SLIME OAD 5

The adventures continue for Rimuru and the Class S students in the fifth OAD of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime!

–This show was good. Not amazing but your higher then average isekai. I’ll watch it. (This was ok. If you liked Slime then this is just more. Gives a little background to the students where the last season ended.)

TONIKAWA: Over the Moon for You

From the creator of Hayate the Combat Butler comes a married life comedy that will send you over the moon!

–Don’t really like comedy so I’ll probably pass. (Did not watch.)

TSUKIUTA. THE ANIMATION 2

The singing units representing the twelve months of the year return in Tsukiuta. The Animation 2!

–Looks like a continuation so I’ll pass. (Did not watch.)

With a Dog AND a Cat, Every Day is Fun

The series for those who can’t choose between cats or dogs, Inu-kun and Neko-sama fill their owner’s day with laughter and love.

–I don’t really like cats and dogs so I’ll probably pass. (Did not watch.)

Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon

Sit, boy! It’s time to watch the Inuyasha sequel series we’ve all been waiting for!

–Did’t realize that Inuyasha needed more but I’ll watch it. (This is interesting. The show definitely keeps the Inuyasha vibe style so I think, if you liked that show this is just more. I really liked all the characters. What’s interesting is that the parents are not around which is what the story is about but you have to wonder what happened to them? Where are they? They story that binds the old cast from the new cast seems pretty weak to me but the rest of it is pretty good. The story is not great but ok like how Inuyasha’s story was. What I really liked is the character design of the new characters and how they interact with each other. I also think that this was the best OP of the Fall 2020 OP’s. There were some good one’s but I think this edged out the rest.)

Continuing Simulcasts

Black Clover

Asta and the Black Bulls begin to uncover the secrets behind the devils and curse magic across the kingdoms!

–Still waiting for the dub. (Did not watch.)

BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS

Boruto continues his adventures to become the ultimate ninja with Team 7 and all your favorite ninja from the Hidden Leaf Village!

–New information that I didn’t really want to gather came to me and I might continue this more. (I continued watching this and will now really stop watching. I don’t need to watch Dragon Ball Z again but have it called Boruto Z.ero.)

Case Closed

Ace teen detective Shinichi Kudo solves cases after becoming trapped in the body of a ten-year-old.

–Still looks like I should try it. (Did not watch.)

Digimon Adventure:

A brand new Digimon adventure continues with the classic DigiDestined cast!

–Not watching. (Did not watch.)

Fire Force Season 2

The Fire Force seeks out the next Pillar and protects humanity from another Great Cataclysm from occurring!

–Can’t wait to see what happens next and where this show goes. (This was ok. The problem with this show was that Season 1 set the bar so high that it is going to be hard to surpass. There were some very good visuals and the sound for this is bar none but the story is going a little off track for me.)

Healin’ Good Pretty Cure

Three girls come together to form the Healin’ Good Pretty Cure team and defend The Healing Garden, a secret world inside Earth!

–Not watching. (Did not watch.)

Major Second Season 2

One young boy aims to become the best baseball catcher on his middle school team!

–Still looks like I should try it. (Did not watch.)

One Piece

Luffy and the Straw Hats continue their adventures in Wano and fight against the powerful Emperors!

–Wano continues to be awesome! (I really like One Piece. And, I feel it is kind of funny because I feel like One Piece has always just been there. And, most of the arcs are pretty good. The Wano arc is moving up and has probably broken into my top five favorite arcs. Sometimes, I feel like One Piece is being ignored because it has been going on for so long but Oda is pushing very hard right now for One Piece to get back on the radar and win some awards or get nominated for some awards rather then it just being another show that people watch.)

Shadowverse

A young boy fights in intense card battles based on the digital smartphone game “Shadowverse”!

–Might try it but probably won’t have time. (Did not watch.)

Overview

Out of 38 shows, 8 I really want to watch, 10 I want to try and 1 maybe. (Out of 38 shows, I saw 10 shows, stopped watching 3 and one I should finish.)

Compared to Summer 2020 which had 29 shows, I watched 5 shows and stopped watching 4 shows.

I ended up watching double the amount of shows this season. I feel like the anime industry is stepping up their game. A lot of the shows this season were pretty solid shows. Dan Machi, Haikyu and Golden Kamuy were shows that I couldn’t wait to watch. The two standout shows for me were Jujusu Kaisen and One Piece.

I also ended up re-watching Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night. These were pretty good shows but not as good as I remember them to be. I remember liking Fate/Zero much better then Stay Night but I’m not sure on the re-watch. The art quality is so much better in Stay Night. But the story seems a little disjointed with the Matou family, Sakura and Shinji. It’s just not coherent. Also the relationship between Rin and Sakura is a little implied but not fully recognized. I still stand by that I like the Rider character in Zero much better then Stay Night as well as the Castor character. The Castor in Stay Night is also a bit confusing. I think I ultimately like Fate/Stay Night better then Fate/Zero by just a bit. Ultimately, I think the entire series has dropped a few places for me as it was just not what I remember it to be or there are better shows in my opinion.

I also watched Your Lie in April. I’m still not sure what to think of this show. The first episode was really good. Then not much was happening but more character and story building. And the end was really good. I’m kind of still thinking about it really. There is a few nitpicks I have with this show. Kaori’s eyes are really strangely drawn to me. I also feel like a little bit more could have been put into the story. It was good but I think just going that extra mile would have really given life to this show. Ultimately it was a pretty good emotional slice of life drama.

Here is to watching more good shows.
