Summer 2020 Recap

With the Spring season of anime behind us, we can look forward to the new Summer 2020 Crunchyroll season of anime. Spring season was definitely the beginning of COVID and how the world deals with this new emerging threat. While there were some really good standout shows for me in the Spring, COVID changed the schedule of release titles making it a much weaker lineup. Let’s take a look at what Crunchyroll has to offer us for the Spring 2020 season.

I am going to list the category the anime falls under and a short thought.

New Simulcasts

The God of High School – Great martial artists from across Korea and the world come together for the action-packed tournament to become The God of High School! –Looks pretty good, I’ll watch it. —Stopped watching after episode 3. The story seemed ok but the show was very rushed in my opinion. I know they have to keep the show exciting but I thought they lost flow by doing it and it became hard to follow.

RE:Zero – Starting Life in Another World – Season 2 – Re:ZERO finally returns as Subaru aims to solve the mysteries behind the death loop and the Fog of Elimination! –Really excited for this continuing series. This was a show that was suppose to air last season but got postponed due to COVID. I’ll watch it. —This show is starting to loose it’s appeal for me. I do want to see what happens when they finish the rest of season 2 but I had and still really have no idea what is happening. I think about 6 shows ago I lost what was going on. Since it’s been so long it’s starting to get boring. I feel like they are just doing things to show how Subaru can die and ways that he can die and I don’t feel like the story is progressing at all. I do see progression but its toward an end that I still can’t comprehend and it’s just not as interesting.

Rent-A-Girlfriend – After a big breakup, Kazuya Kinoshita meets Chizuru Mizuhara, a young woman who works as a “Rental Girlfriend.” –Looks ok. I don’t really like the title of this show and not sure if I will watch it. —I watched one episode and stopped watching. It was not for me.

Gibiate – In the year 2030, zombies and monsters called Gibia roam Japan with samurai and ninja set out to defeat them. –Not sure what to think of this. I might give this a try. —Watched about seven episodes of this before I stopped watching. I could tell it was very low budget and I feel they could have changed the story a bit to fit their budget. But they didn’t and the story got a bit uninteresting for me.

The Misfit of Demon King Academy – An old demon king is reincarnated 2,000 years after his reign and is accepted into a school with all his descendants. –Don’t think I would like this one. —Did not watch.

Fire Fore Season 2 – The Fire Force seeks out the next Pillar and protects humanity from another Great Cataclysm from occurring! –Season one of Fire Force was amazing and I am really looking forward to this new season! —This was pretty good. I think the problem for me was that Season 1 set the bar so high that it would be hard to equal or surpass and this was not as good as Season 1 for me. It was still good and am looking forward to more episodes.

Mr Love:Queen’s Choice – A young woman inherits her late father’s production company and encounters four men who uncover a massive conspiracy. –Promo visual looks pretty good but the synopsis not to sure about. Maybe. —Did not watch.

Healin’ Good Pretty Cure – Three girls come together to form the Healin’ Good Pretty Cure team and defend The Healing Garden, a secret world inside Earth! –Not sure about this one either. Looks like a Pulla Magica Madoka theme and art without the weird stuff. Maybe. —Did not watch.

Monster Girl Doctor – A doctor named Glenn specializes in treating all kinds of monster girls in a world where humans and monsters coexist. –Haven’t really watched any of the other Monster Girl shows so not sure if I should start with this one. Probably pass. —Did not watch.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime OAD 4 – Part two of the brand new OAD of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime! –This show was good enough to watch so and I haven’t seen any of of OAD’s so I’ll probably watch them. —Did not watch.

Ninja Collection – Modern-day ninjas are on a mission to stop the darkness from spreading in the Tokyo metropolis. — This one look interesting. I might try this one out. —Did not watch.

Umayon – The horse girls are back with these bite-sized anime shorts! –Don’t think I finished the first one so I’ll pass. —Did not watch.

My Teen Romantic Comedy Snafu Climax! – The third and final season of SNAFU brings together Hachiman, Yukino, Yui, and the whole Service Club for one last job. –Have not seen first season. Pass. —Did not watch.

Returning Spring Titles

Extra Olympia Kyklos – Demetrios, a young man in Ancient Greece, is struck by lightning and transported to 1964 Tokyo! –Not much to go on so I’ll probably pass. Did not watch.

Digimon Adventure: – A brand new Digimon adventure begins with the classic DigiDestined cast! –I think this was another one that was postponed due to COVID last season. Maybe. —Watched 2 episodes and stopped watching. I remember Pokemon being better and I didn’t want to continue a show with ok animation and a bad plot.

Food Wars! The Fifth Plate – In the heated final season of Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma, Yukihira Soma and the Totsuki Academy compete in The Blue! –Really excited for this last season. This was one that was postponed due to COVID last season. I was turned off by season three and four. When I binge watched it again it was pretty good so I think it was just too long between each show that I forgot what was happening. —This is more of Food Wars. I was expecting a bit more from the final season but it was ok. There were some twists that kept it evolving to new heights but not sure if it was for the better. The final episode was ok but I was expecting more. I’m just happy that it didn’t end with aliens like most other anime’s.

Sword Art Online Alicization War of Underworld – Our heroes to push forward to save Alice. The final arc of Sword Art Online: Alicization is coming soon! –Don’t really like this flux Eugeo arc so I’ll pass. —Did not watch.

Major Second Season 2 – One young boy aims to become the best baseball catcher on his middle school team! –This actually looks interesting so might start from season one. Maybe. —Did not watch.

A Certain Scientific Railgun T – Misaka’s electro-manipulation abilities make her popular in Academy City in the 3rd season of A Certain Scientific Railgun! –Stopped watching in season one so I’ll pass. —Did not watch.

Gundam Build Divers Re:Rise 2nd Season – The next great battle for the Build Divers begins in the second season of Gundam Build Divers Re:RISE! –Been wanting to get back into Gundam again and might start at season one. Maybe. —Did not watch.

Continuing Simulcasts

One Piece – Luffy and the Straw Hats continue their adventures in the vast and secluded land of Wano! –Wano arc is amazing and can’t wait for the next One Piece! —The Wano arc is still really good. But, the last few episodes are starting to bring it down a notch and I’m not sure I like where it is going. In any case, Wano is becoming one of my top arcs of One Piece.

Black Clover – Asta and the Black Bulls begin to uncover the secrets behind the devils and curse magic across the kingdoms! –Still haven’t tried the dub. —Did not watch.

BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS – Boruto continues his adventures to become the ultimate ninja with Team 7 and all your favorite ninja from the Hidden Leaf Village! –Haven’t gotten back to this one. —Did not watch. But, I did kind of accidentally see a small spoiler that changes my opinion of why I stopped watching so I might pick it up again.

Fruits Basket: 2nd Season – Tohru Honda and the Sohma family return for Season 2 of the adaptation of the classic shojo manga! –Pretty excited for this new season. —What an amazing season! This was so good. I didn’t realize that this show could go to a next level and it did for me. I can’t wait for the continuation.

Ahiru no Sora – Sora vows to dominate his first high school basketball tournament, but he must take on the whole school to get there. — I have not seen this one but since it is continuing it must be pretty good. Might watch this one. —Did not watch.

Case Closed – Ace teen detective Shinichi Kudo solves cases after becoming trapped in the body of a ten-year-old. — I have not seen this one but it is continuing so it must be pretty good. —Did not watch.

Shadowverse – A young boy fights in intense card battles based on the digital smartphone game “Shadowverse”! –I’ll pass on this one. —Did not watch.

Wacky TV Nanana Chase the Kraken Monster! – The TV Nanana crew slip into the third season of network high jinks that will split your sides. –Have not seen this one. —Did not watch.

Welcome to the Japari Park S2 – All your favorite animal pals from Kemono Friends return for the second season of mini-series, Welcome to JAPARI PARK! –Have not seen Kemono Friends. —Did not watch.

Overview

Out of 29 shows, 7 I really want to watch, 2 will try out and 9 are maybe’s.–I ended up watching 5 shows and stopped watching 4 shows.

–Compared to Spring 2020 which had 26 shows, 5 postponed due to COVID, 3 I stopped watching and 4 I watched.

That’s a lot of watching. I’m really excited to continue watching Re:Zero, Fire Force, Food Wars and One Piece. The God of High School also looks like a show right up my ally. Tournaments, training and powers with some story. —Fruits Basket is my top pick for favorite show of Summer 2020 and it won by a pretty far margin. Followed by One Piece, Fire Force, Food Wars and Re:Zero.

In addition, I’m also looking to Finish up Fate/Grand Order and I went into Kaguya-sama: Love is War with the wrong mindset so I am going to give that one another try. And, I’ve been re-watching shows and I want to see Yowamushi Pedal, Fate/Zero, Fate/Stay Night and Akame ga Kill! again.

I did end up finishing Fate/Grand Order which was ok. I stopped watching Kaguya-sama: Love is War at episode 3 but I did see the end credits which showed the Chika dance which was really well done and pretty cool. I also watched Goblin’s Crown which is the Goblin Slayer movie. It was ok. More Goblin Slayer. And, I finally saw Your Name. It was a very strange story and I want to watch it again at some point. I went in knowing nothing except that it did very well in the box office. I think Weathering With You is better. But it was good. Makoto Shinkai likes to build the story up very slowly and then the big thing happens and it hits hard. I just feel that the buildup is so slow and could be done a bit faster, but I guess I’m not complaining. He kept me watching and when it hits, it hits hard in both movies.

The Crunchyroll Summer 2020 line up to not be as good as I though it would. A lot of Decent shows but not many that blew me away as I though.  The Fall lineup is looking pretty good with a bunch of continuing and new shows I am looking forward too. Maybe it’s hype but I’m excited.
